Windows was unable to format memory card (Solution)

“Windows was unable complete the format”. Are you one of those who is getting such kind of error messages while formatting the memory card/USB drive. Here is the solution to this problem. Try to format the memory card from the command prompt by following these steps. 

Warning: Before proceeding further take backup of all your important data as formatting process will erase all data of your memory card. 

First of all, Insert your memory card into memory card reader and then plug it to the USB port then 

Step 1: Click Start then choose Run.. option from the menu. Run dialog box will be appeared on the screen. 

Step 2: Type in CMD at there and then press Enter key.

Step 3: Command prompt screen will be appeared on the screen. 

Step 4: Type Format at the command prompt (In my case memory card is I drive) so i will type here Format I: then press Enter key to start formatting process. As you press Enter key it will ask you 
Insert new disk for drive i: 
and press Enter when ready….
as shown in the image below.

Note : Always make sure that you are typing appropriate drive name otherwise you will format different drive, incase if it is incorret. 

Step 5: Now Press Enter key. Formatting will be started, After formatting It will ask you to Enter Volume Label for the memory card. Type a desired name there for your memory card and then press Enter key. If you don’t need to give a name to the memory card then just press the Enter key. 

Step 6: Now type Exit at command prompt to return to windows. And you are done. 

Hope this trick will solve such kind of formatting problem. You can also try this method for formatting USB pen drive.

“There is no Disk in Drive” (Solution) While Formatting the Memory card.

If you are getting such kind of error messages like “There is no disk in Drive, Please insert the disk, and then try again” While formatting the memory card (whether it is Micro SD, Mini SD or MMC) from My Computer using format option by right clicking on the drive in Windows. Such kind of error comes when Windows does not recognised the memory card. Here I am explaining in detail that how will you overcome this problem. The card you are trying to format may be of any capacity whether it is 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB or 16 GB. These tips will surely help you. These tips are on only the trial and error basis.

#1: In case you are using a memory card reader to format a memory card, check that whether the memory card reader you connected properly at the USB port of the computer. If it is ok then try to connect your memory card reader at different USB port and try to format it. If you are using USB HUB, then try to connect your card reader directly at the USB port. 

If first tip does not work then try 2nd tip, If you are using inbuilt memory card reader then skip the first step. 

#2: If you are using Adopter for the memory card, check whether your adopter is ok and you plug memory card into the adopter properly. 

#3: Also check that contact points of the memory card are clean. You can clean the contact points through cotton or a soft cloth. 

#4: Restart your PC and try again. 

#5: Check that you plug adopter into the memory card reader properly and also check for its direction. 

Hope this will help you; if not then try this one 

#6: Try with another Adopter and Memory card reader just to check that adopter or memory card reader not has gone bad probably. 

If all the above tips does not work then 

#7: Try to format the card on another PC. 

#8: Try to format your memory card through Mobile handset in case if it is Micro SD/Memory card of mobile phone. If this memory card of any digital camera so try to format this memory card directly through the camera (If there is a option to format the card)

If all the above tips don’t help you Then probably your memory card has gone bad or useless. 

How to format a memory card using disk management tool -

If you can’t format your Memory card/USB drive/USB pen drive using My computer – right click – format option, then you can do the same by using windows Disk Management tool. Here is how you can do it. 

warning : Always take backup of your important data before formatting any drive/memory card/usb pen drive

#1: Right Click My Computer and then select Manage from the menu.


#2: Computer Management windows will be appeared on the screen. 

#3: Click Disk Management option as shown below 


#4: All the drives will be shown in the right pane of the window. Right click the desired drive then select format.. option from the menu. 



#5: One more window will be appeared on the screen. There you may type Volume Label for your memory card. It’s nothing but a name for the memory card. Also you can select the desired file system for the memory card such as FAT or FAT32 and then click OK button to start the formatting process. 



#6: A warning message will be appeared on the screen that formatting process will erase all data.Click OK button to confirm. Wait until 100% format process is done.

What is a memory card ?

Memory card is a small, light weight, easily portable, removable, electronic data storage device which can be used to store audio, video, photos, multimedia presentation and any document in digital format. It is also known as flash card. Data of memory card is retained without power. It is used in many electronic gadgets like mobile phones, Ipod, Digital camera, Handy camera, Video game console etc.

It comes in many varieties such as MicroSD , MiniSD, MMC (Multi Media Card), Miniature Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick Micro M2, Secure Digital card etc.

It comes in various capacities. So according to our need we should buy it. It comes in 256 MB (Mega bytes), 512 MB, 1 GB (Giga Bytes), 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and more. It totally depends on our use and what kind of data and how much data we would like to store on it.

If you are using high resolution digital camera such as 8.0 mega pixel or 10 or 12.0 mega pixel then you should use at least 4 GB of memory card. If you are using 5.0 mega pixel camera then 2 GB will do.

How to format a memory card ?

Now a day’s memory card is used in many electronic gadgets to store music, videos, documents,Photos etc. Sometimes data of its automatically got corrupted or even it can not show its content. I also faced such kind of problem in my digital camera. So we need to format it. So Here I am giving you detailed explanation of How to format a memory card in Windows XP.

Formatting of a memory card requires a device called memory card reader.

Warning: Formatting process of memory card will erase all stored data. So please keep in mind, always take backup of your important data at another location. (Simply copy the important data at your hard disk drive)

Step 1: Insert your memory card into the memory card reader. (There are different kind of memory card readers are available in the market. some support Mini, Some Micro SD and some MMC (Multi Media Card) and also special kind of memory card readers which supports almost all kind of memory cards are also available. Here I assume that you have appropriate card reader for your memory card.

Step 2: Now attach this memory card reader to USB (Universal Serial Bus) port.

Step 3: Click Start Button then click My Computer.

Step 4: In My Computer you may find a removable drive in my case it is Removable Disk (I:). (Before formatting always make sure that it is the right drive which you are going to format). Now right click this drive and then choose Format… option from the menu. A window will be appeared on the screen. It shows Capacity of memory card, File system in my case it is FAT32. If you want to give a name to your memory card then type a desired name in Volume label text box. If you want to quickly format the memory card then check Quick Format option otherwise leave it unchecked.

Step 5: Now click Start button to start formatting process of the memory card. When u press Start button, A warning message will be appeared on the screen that all the data stored on the memory card will be erased.

Step 6: Click Ok to start the process. Now formatting process will be started and progress indicator will be shown to you.

as soon as formatting will be complete, a message format complete will be appeared on the screen.

And you are done.

1. First connect the mobile with the flasher box as shown in the picture and connect flasher box with computer with a USB cable.

2. Now open DCTx-UFX Software.

3. Now Click "Connect" button.

4. Now choose the model of mobile phone which is to be flash from different catagories such as DCT3, DCT4

5. Now choose MCU file.

6. Now choose PPM file.

7. Now click on "Check" Button.

8. Now click on "Flash" Button.

What is flashing?

DCTx UFSx is a flashing software.

First you need to start DCTxUFSx software in your computer/PC.

Connect:- First you need to click on "connect" button. It will show details of the UFS box. If details are shown means UFS box is connected properly to the computer. Then you need to choose model for which do you want to do flashing. Choose your model from different catagories such as DCT3 , DCT4 etc.

Check : - Then you need to click on "Check" button. If "Ist Book Ok" message appears means mobile hardware is ok. If "IInd Book Ok" message appears means mobile Software is ok. If "Ist Book Error" message appears means mobile hardware is not ok.

Info:- If you click "Info" button it will show complete details of the mobile phone such as security code, manufacturing date, sofware version, software date etc.

Then you need to choose MCU and PPM file to flash. 
MCU = nhu5nx05.110 It is software file
PPM = nhu5nx05.11k It is a language file

Then click "Falsh" button to start flashing. Then wait a while to complete the flashing. If any error occurs in between the flashing then see the error message and according to the message take decision accordingly.
